What is transnasal gastroscopy with urease test?
Transnasal gastroscopy is an endoscopic examination of the upper gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, stomach, pylorus, and duodenum) performed with an ultra-thin endoscope inserted through the nose. The procedure causes significantly less discomfort than traditional gastroscopy and is often chosen by people who cannot tolerate oral examination. The procedure includes a urease test for Helicobacter pylori.
Benefits of transnasal gastroscopy:
Less discomfort during examination
The ultra-thin endoscope inserted through the nose causes significantly less stress and discomfort than traditional oral gastroscopy. Before the examination, the nostril is anesthetized with lidocaine solution, and a soft silicone catheter ensures the safety of the procedure.
High diagnostic quality
Despite the small size of the endoscope, the examination provides high-quality images and accurately assesses the condition of the upper gastrointestinal tract. It is also possible to perform a urease test for Helicobacter pylori.
Safety and quick return to activity
The examination is safe - mucosal damage is very rare (trace amounts of blood resolve spontaneously). After the examination, there is only a 40-minute break from eating and drinking, after which you can return to normal activities.

Is transnasal gastroscopy right for you?
The examination is intended for adults with upper gastrointestinal complaints. It is especially recommended for people who cannot tolerate traditional oral gastroscopy. Indications for the examination include: nausea and vomiting, heartburn and reflux, difficulty swallowing, feeling of fullness in the stomach, gastrointestinal bleeding, anemia, iron deficiency, unexplained weight loss, and upper abdominal pain. Gastroscopy is also performed in the diagnosis of celiac disease and in people with a family history of gastrointestinal cancers.
Scope of transnasal gastroscopy:
- Endoscopic evaluation of the esophagus
- Endoscopic evaluation of the gastric cardia
- Endoscopic evaluation of the stomach
- Endoscopic evaluation of the pylorus
- Endoscopic evaluation of the duodenum
- Urease test for Helicobacter pylori
Preparation and procedure:
- Before examination: 6-8 hours without food, at least 4 hours without drinking, 1 hour without smoking
- Bring to examination: referral from your doctor with medications listed (or all medications you take), previous results of gastrointestinal tests
- Medications: take cardiac medications in the morning with a small amount of water, bring diabetes medications with you and take after examination, anticoagulants - consult with your attending physician
- During examination: local anesthesia of the nostril with lidocaine solution, insertion of soft silicone catheter, introduction of ultra-thin endoscope through the nose
- After examination: 40-minute break from eating and drinking, then return to normal activities
Important Information :
- The test is performed for adults.
- A referral from a doctor is required for the test. According to current legal regulations, for endoscopic tests, the medications that the patient is being treated with should be listed on the referral; if the doctor has not listed the medications, the patient should bring all the medications they are taking.
- We do not register tests in Video format.
- The price of the service includes the gastroscopy and the urease test. If additional services are required, such as histopathological examination of the tissue sample suspected of disease changes, this will be an additional charge, according to the current price list of Centrum Medyczne Damiana.
- During the gastroscopy, it is not possible to take a sample for Helicobacter pylori culture.
