What does a neurologist do?

A neurologist specialist deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the nervous (neurological) system. Neurological diseases include migraine, epilepsy, sciatica, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's chorea, myasthenia gravis, among others.

Indications for consultation with a neurologist

Consultation with a specialist is indicated when symptoms such as:

• headaches;
• dizziness and fainting;
• memory disorders;
• numbness and tingling in the extremities;
• muscle tremors;
• nervous tics;
• neuralgia;
• violent, sudden disturbances of balance, motor coordination, vision or hearing.

Scope of the visit

During the consultation, the neurologist:

• takes a thorough history, including complaints, past and present illnesses, and medications taken on a regular basis;
• performs a physical neurological examination;
• makes a diagnosis and informs about further treatment,
• makes referrals for laboratory and imaging tests;
• issues sick leave.

The doctor may order, among other things:

• MRI;
• CT scan;
• X-ray of the skull and spine;
• electroencephalography (EEG);
• electroneurography;
• electromyography.

• A visit to a neurologist does not require special preparation. You should bring with you an identity document and the results of tests relevant to the doctor, if they have been performed.
• The consultation lasts 15 minutes.
• You must arrive no later than 15 minutes before the appointment.
