Lutropin (LH, or luteinizing hormone) is a hormone secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. Among its most important functions include regulation of the menstrual cycle, and in men, stimulating interstitial cells to secrete testosterone. LH hormone levels change with age. During ovulation it increases slightly.
Lutropin testing is performed along with laboratory analyses of laboratory analyses of other hormones including testosterone, progesterone.
LH hormone concentration testing is ordered in the following cases:
- diagnosis and treatment of female and male infertility,
- disorders of the pituitary gland,
- diseases of the gonads (ovaries or testicles),
- disorders of menstruation and puberty,
- disorders of ovulation,
- polycystic ovary syndrome,
High levels of lutropin (lh hormone) can indicate such conditions such as pituitary adenoma, ovarian failure and testicular failure. Low values may indicate damage to the pituitary gland.
The use of certain medications can contribute to increased LH concentrations in the blood.
