The procedure involves observation of pigmented naevi (commonly known as “moles”) using a special camera that visualises skin lesions in magnification and under proper lighting. This advanced technology makes it possible for dermatologists to make an in-depth assessment of the particular structures of the naevus, otherwise invisible to the naked eye.
What does video dermatoscopy involve?
The patient stands in front of the lens in specific positions, and the specialist (dermatologist) uses the apparatus to take pictures of all body parts – from the side, back and front, in order to capture every single element. This method helps to examine all naevi – both visible to latent ones.
Advantages of video dermatoscopy:
- digital monitoring and mapping of each skin lesion over the entire surface of the skin, along with verification whether a given naevus is dangerous,
- comparing initial scans with the scans obtained at successive intervals (during appointments, tests) and monitoring the potential progression of an illness,
- suspicious lesions can be marked on the clinical image,
- all newly-formed skin lesions are detected and adequately marked.
What is the difference between a Dermatologist consultation with videodermatoscopic assessment of naevi and the Dermatologist consultation with videodermatoscopic assessment of naevi – a whole body scan ?
- The service with naevus assessment without a body scan, on the other hand, involves dermatological assessment of single naevi using a special handpiece equipped with a camera that sends a magnified image of the skin fragment under assessment to a computer screen.
- The whole body scan concerns all the naevi on the patient’s body, both the visible and the latent ones. The dermatologist takes pictures of selected body parts using a special apparatus. Next, the image is sent to a programme that maps the skin lesions on the patient’s body.
Duration of the appointment: 30 minutes.
Patients must arrive not later than 15 minutes before their scheduled appointment.
