This test is part of the glucose tolerance curve (oral glucose tolerance test – OGTT).
Glucose level measurements after glucose intake are used in diagnosing patients with carbohydrate metabolism disorders (diabetes, neonatal hypoglycemia, idiopathic hypoglycemia). It is also recommended for preventive screenings, annual check-ups for at-risk patients, and pregnant women.
An increase in glucose levels is observed in:
- diabetes,
- pituitary and adrenal gland dysfunctions,
- pancreatic diseases,
- dialyzed patients,
- pregnancy.
A decrease in glucose levels occurs in:
- insulin overdose,
- overdose of oral antidiabetic drugs,
- hormonal insufficiency of the pituitary and adrenal glands,
- inborn metabolic disorders,
- toxic liver damage.
On the day of the test:
- The patient must be fasting – meaning no food intake for approximately 12 hours before the test.
- In the morning, drinking water is allowed – up to one glass.
- If possible, the blood sample should be collected before taking the morning dose of medication, unless instructed otherwise by a physician.
- Prior to the test, the patient should remain at rest for 10–15 minutes (seated position).
- Physical activity, even moderate (e.g. walking, climbing stairs), can affect the test results.
- It is recommended to arrive for the test by 9:00 AM.
If the patient is not properly prepared for the test, the results may not be fully reliable.
- Test results are available within 3 business days.
- The results can be collected at the reception of any Medicover Center.
