This is the first vaccine approved in the European Union against RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) for individuals aged 60 and over. The goal of the vaccine is to prevent lower respiratory tract diseases caused by RSV—a virus that can be especially dangerous for older adults and those with weakened immune systems.
About the disease – RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus)
RSV is a virus that causes respiratory tract infections. In healthy adults and children, it usually causes mild cold-like symptoms. However, in older adults (60+) and people with chronic conditions, it can lead to serious complications, including:
● Bronchitis,
● Pneumonia,
● Exacerbation of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease),
● Respiratory failure.
RSV spreads via droplets, similar to influenza or COVID-19, and can be highly contagious, especially during the autumn and winter seasons.
Who should get vaccinated?
Vaccination is recommended for individuals:
● Aged 60 years and older, especially those with:
○ Chronic lung diseases (e.g., COPD, asthma),
○ Cardiovascular diseases,
○ Diabetes,
○ Weakened immune systems (e.g., after chemotherapy or organ transplantation),
● Living in nursing homes or long-term care facilities.
Travel – when and where is vaccination recommended?
There are no specific countries with significantly higher RSV risk—RSV is globally widespread, particularly during infection seasons (fall, winter, spring).
Vaccination is especially recommended:
● Before the autumn-winter season,
● Prior to travel to colder climates,
● Before staying in places with high risk of exposure (e.g., crowded cities, care homes, health resorts).
Who is the vaccine intended for?
● Adults aged 60+, especially those with chronic illnesses,
● Seniors in frequent contact with children (who can transmit RSV),
● Patients planning stays in nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, or health resorts.
Vaccination schedule
● Single intramuscular dose.
● Currently, there are no official guidelines on the need for booster doses—this may change as more research and regulatory recommendations become available.
How long does immunity last?
Available data indicate that protection lasts for at least one infection season (approximately 12 months). Studies are ongoing to assess longer-term immunity and the potential need for future booster doses.
What does the vaccine contain?
● Recombinant RSV antigen (RSVPreF3) – based on purified RSV F protein,
● Adjuvant AS01E – an immune response enhancer (also used in the shingles vaccine – Shingrix),
● Excipients – water for injection, phosphates, chlorides.
The vaccine does not contain live virus, so it cannot cause RSV infection.
Possible side effects
Most side effects are mild and self-resolving:
● Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site,
● Fatigue,
● Headache,
● Muscle and joint pain,
● Fever (less common).
Less common reactions may include:
● Hypersensitivity reactions,
● Swollen lymph nodes.
Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) are very rare—thus, a 15–30 minute observation period after vaccination is recommended.
Contraindications
● Allergy to any vaccine component,
● Acute illness with fever (vaccination should be postponed),
● Neurological conditions should be evaluated by a physician before vaccination.
Summary
This vaccine is a safe and effective way to protect older adults from serious RSV complications. It helps reduce the risk of hospitalization and severe respiratory infection during the fall and winter seasons.
It is especially recommended for individuals aged 60+ and for those planning stays in care facilities, sanatoriums, or travel to colder regions.
