Tetanus is a serious, potentially fatal infectious disease caused by the neurotoxin of Clostridium tetani, which enters the body through contaminated wounds, cuts, bites, or burns. The disease is not transmitted between people, but it progresses rapidly and is difficult to treat—hence the importance of prevention.
How does the vaccine work?
The vaccine contains a purified, toxoid form of the tetanus toxin, which stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies. This gives the body resistance to the effects of the toxin.
Immunity after vaccination:
● Usually develops about 2 weeks after vaccination.
● A full primary series (3 doses) provides protection for approximately 10 years.
● Booster doses are recommended every 10 years, especially for adults at risk of exposure (e.g., manual laborers, farmers, travelers).
Vaccination before travel
Tetanus occurs worldwide—particularly in countries with lower hygiene standards and limited access to healthcare.
Vaccination is especially recommended before travel to:
● African countries (e.g., Nigeria, Tanzania, Egypt, Senegal),
● Southeast Asia (e.g., India, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam),
● South and Central America (e.g., Peru, Brazil, Bolivia),
● Other areas where there is increased risk of injuries or poor access to medical care.
In case of sudden injury in such regions, individuals without up-to-date vaccination may require immediate tetanus immunoglobulin administration.
Who should be vaccinated?
● Adults with no prior vaccination or incomplete vaccination history,
● People whose last booster was more than 10 years ago,
● Manual laborers, farmers, foresters, gardeners,
● Children and adolescents according to the national immunization schedule,
● Travelers to tropical countries, rural areas, and places with low sanitary standards.
What does the vaccine contain?
● Tetanus toxoid (purified, inactivated tetanus toxin),
● Adsorbed on aluminum hydroxide (an adjuvant that enhances the immune response),
● Excipients such as sodium chloride and water for injection.
Contraindications:
● Acute infection or fever,
● Allergy to any component of the vaccine or severe reaction to a previous dose.
Possible side effects:
● Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site,
● Temporary headaches, muscle aches, fever,
● Rarely – hypersensitivity reactions.
Important information:
The vaccine does not include a pre-vaccination consultation with a travel medicine doctor.
The consultation must be purchased separately and is valid for 24 hours before the vaccination.
After purchase, you will be contacted within 2 business days to schedule your qualification appointment.
If the doctor does not approve you for vaccination, you must reschedule another qualification visit for the date provided. This follow-up visit is billed separately.
