Duplex doppler ultrasound scan of the veins of the lower limbs

The duplex doppler ultrasound scan of the veins of the lower limbs is used to assess the condition of the venous vessels of the lower limbs (both superficial and deep veins) and the blood flow in the veins. Among other things, the examination checks the patency and capacity of the veins.

An ultrasound scan of the veins of the lower limbs is performed:

• in suspected venous thrombosis,
• in the diagnosis of lower limb oedema,
• in chronic venous insufficiency,
• in congenital vascular malformations,
• before and after surgery related to the venous system.

The examination uses the Doppler effect to assess the speed and direction of blood flow in the blood vessels. This makes it possible to detect abnormalities related to the cardiovascular system.

The duplex doppler ultrasound examination of the veins of the lower limbs is similar to other ultrasound examinations. The doctor places the head of the device on the patient’s body and moves it around while assessing the image seen on the monitor. The examination is painless, non-invasive and completely safe.
