Vasectomy - what is worth knowing?

The vasectomy procedure involves permanently blocking the flow of sperm into the ejaculate by cutting and ligating the vas deferens. It is a reversible procedure, but it is important to remember that revasectomy - a procedure to restore fertility - is not always fully effective. Among other things, the outcome of a revasectomy is affected by the amount of time that has passed since the procedure to cut the vas deferens. For this reason, it is recommended to perform vasectomy only in men who do not plan to procreate or who already have offspring and do not intend to expand the family. The decision to have the procedure should always be well thought out.

Importantly, after the procedure, intercourse has an unchanged physiology - the procedure does not affect hormonal balance, libido or sexual performance. As before, erection and ejaculation occur, but the ejaculate is devoid of sperm. Some patients even report increased satisfaction with their sex life due to the lack of stress associated with the risk of unwanted pregnancy and the lack of need for hormonal contraception by the partner.

The effectiveness of the procedure is more than 99%. At the same time, it is worth remembering that vasectomy does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases.

What does the procedure look like?

Vasectomy is performed under local anesthesia. The procedure is not complicated and usually takes 15-30 minutes. Immediately after the procedure you can go home.

Side effects

After the procedure, there is a small (less than 1%) risk of testicular pain lasting a few days and wound infection, in which case you should immediately go for a follow-up consultation.

Recommendations after the procedure

Recovery time is about 7-14 days. For several days after the procedure, you should refrain from sexual activity and intense exercise. Activities other than normal daily hygiene are not required. Over-the-counter pain medications can be used if pain occurs.

After a minimum of 25 ejaculations and 2-3 months, a semen test - seminogram - should be performed. At that time, there should be no more sperm in the ejaculate. Until the effectiveness of the procedure is confirmed, additional contraceptive methods are recommended.
